Greetings all! Todays Masterpiece of Zombie cinima is called The Beast Within. This Piece rated two stars on NetFlix and 3.5 on IMDB. As we know we are not dealing with an award winner. But hey, It's my job.
Zombie flicks meets Alfred Hitchock's The Birds.
This starts out with three friends on the road to go visit Robert's grandfather's estate after his untimely demise. It's obvious that the young man didnt have an especially happy childhood in this house (mansion) or town. It seems that the H1N5 (yes H1N5) virus mutates and crosses over species as easily as a cold from person to person.
The acting isn't quite as bad as I predicted. The three gentlemen invite 2 young ladies over, one just happens to be the ex GF of Robert. After consuming vast amounts of absinthe two of the teens go up stairs and get into some interesting intercourse involving chains and a lab chair. KINKY!.
The lesser stable of the three has a bad trip and starts to go over the deep end.
The all important vector of communicability is meat that sold at a fast food restaurant. As the town slowly becomes infected the 5 teenagers have to contend not only with the zombies that have found them but also the animals in the surrounding area. Not to mention Patrick who was bitten and is now infected. The freakshow Eugene that tripped out earlier and is now a threat to all in the house. Robert tries to maintain some level of cohesion in the group.
The "zombie" effects are not that impressive. It appears to be more of an infection of rabies. As the dead dont appear to reanimate. Nor is the typical "destroy the brain" method utilized here. Eugene starts to show symptoms of infection but refuses to go into quarantine and leaves the house. (smart move dumb ass).
As they await the morning to try and get help the group starts to loose its cohesion with two infected and only Robert and the two girls remaining uninfected. Patrick breaks loose from his restraints and one of the girls snaps and go running headlong into the group of zombies welding an axe and does pretty good work at taking quite a few down. She then into the forest chased by a horde of the infected. Assuming to be lost and killed.
Patrick chases Robert and his ex into the watch tower eventually causing the chick to fall to her death with Robert and Patrick shortly following her down. Robert survives because he falls ontop of Patrick. The military eventually rolls in and tries to contain the situation but it is left to the viewer to determine if this is the case. The survivors are shipped to the quarantine zone. Again , it is left to the viewer to determine the fates of those in the quarantine zone.
Overall, I dont see how this received such poor marks. As a Zombie flick it doesn't fit. As a stand alone movie not being compared to the typical zombie movie was not that bad. Not very good. the characters were developed well. The story didn't have a lot of gaps that leave the watcher scratching their head. and leaves just enough at the end in terms of leaving the watcher wondering that it was enjoyable.
Personally I give this 4 severed thumbs. And remember,
I watch this shit so you dont have to!
